I created a small script for making a new snapshot, called it mk-snapshot and added it to crontab (I have regular snapshots of my home directory every hour). Also from time to time, when working on my code, I explicitly call mk-snapshot, which takes 0.1 second to run and gives me a point to go back or to later compare to.

It's totally awesome.
